At Richard Lee, we strive to empower young minds with a vibrant music curriculum fostering cultural capital through live performances, digital exploration and enrichment opportunities.
Our passionate teachers ignite a lifelong love for music, nurturing individual talents and inspiring further independent exploration. With a carefully sequenced curriculum, we guide students on a journey of skill development and cultural discovery, equipping them to excel as competent performers, composers and attentive listeners. Through performance, we instil confidence, fostering self-assurance and expression in every child.
Music Curriculum Design
Our Music Curriculum, based on the Charanga programme of learning, serves as a foundation for creating an ambitious and progressive curriculum that builds on prior learning.
We have structured our curriculum to align with National Curriculum content, clearly outlined by year group. This is enhanced with carefully planned learning steps to ensure progression across each key stage. Core elements such as listening and appraising (covering pulse, rhythm, pitch, dynamics, tempo, timbre, structure and texture), instrumental skills (reading and playing music), composing (improvisation and composition) and performing are regularly revisited, allowing knowledge and skills to deepen and become more complex over time.
Our curriculum is designed to help students connect new musical concepts to their existing knowledge base. By incorporating research-based strategies that promote deep learning and retention, we facilitate the transfer of knowledge into long-term memory and its integration into meaningful frameworks.
Active engagement in the creative process enhances learning. Our curriculum encourages students to engage in critical listening, sound experimentation and self-expression through music. By encouraging creative exploration and musical activities, we help students develop their critical thinking, problem-solving skills and encourage a richer appreciation of musical concepts.
We introduce and reinforce musical vocabulary to ensure students can articulate their musical ideas and understandings. These terms are revisited in subsequent years to deepen comprehension and support long-term retention.
Our Curriculum will be implemented by expert teachers through:
